Critters and Company!

We enjoyed a lyceum today called "Critters and Company". They specialized in using animals in presentations. We saw a parrot that whistled, two hedgehogs, a chicken named Ana, iguana, porcupine named Zoey, and a North American red tail hawk named Teal. Each animal that was brought out to us had a story. The presenter stressed how you can always take three steps when you are involved with bullying/teasing.

1. Ignore them
2. Tell a grown up if it continues
3. Tell them "Please stop. I don't like what you are doing."

He told us a story about how the porcupine was being bugged by this dog and the dog just wouldn't leave him alone. Well the dog kept on and kept on while the porcupine kept trying to ignore him. That dog decided to get a little too close and ended up with quills all over his mouth. I think that dog won't be teasing the porcupine anymore.

The presenters also called an a student in our class....miss Kaydence. They asked her to select a teacher from the school to go up front to help them, and guess who she picked........ ME! I was pretty nervous...because I had no idea what she was volunteering me for and I didn't know what kind of animal they were going to bring out. Well luckily it was only two hedgehogs. So I thought! They had me pet the first hedgehog (it felt very prickly) and it didn't seem to be bothered at all by me petting him. But... when I went to pet the second hedgehog... he didn't feel the same. When I put my hand on his prickly back he moved really quick and made a funny noise and then of course I JUMPED and pulled my hand back fast. I can't believe I didn't scream because... I WAS SPOOKED! I saw a couple of you guys jump in the crowd with me though! The presenter made a great connection with what was happening in this situation. We all thought that the hedgehogs wouldn't mind being petted but... we were wrong. You can't just assume someone is alright with what you are doing. Not everyone is the same! The presenter called me up to the front one last time to thank me for helping him in the activity. For all the help our class did we recieved a special poster with Teal the hawk on it. It says...

Sorry is good...
...Change is better.

Such a good statement that we will display in our room! I thought it was a wonderful lyceum and I could see in the students eyes that they really enjoyed it too!

Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze!

We braved the COLD and went to the pumpkin patch and corn maze. The maze was pretty impressive this year. I wasn't sure we were ever going to make it out of there! We only made a couple wrong turns! After we made our way through the maze, we each got to pick out the perfect pumpkin for our project. I think this class did a great job of picking the perfect pumpkin! I hope you enjoy our pictures below! :)

Entering the corn maze!

They were in a hurry!

Pumpkin Patch Reader's Theater!

We have been practicing really hard on a readers theater called Pumpkin Patch. I am so impressed with all three of our reading groups! They sure used some wonderful expression and read so fluently. Check out our "monkey" group reading the Pumpkin Patch!

Trip to the Fire Station!

Our class wrote "Thank You" letters to give to the firefighters when we went over to the fire station. They really took their time and they turned out so nice. Pictures of our work is below!

When we went to the fire station we all huddled in together in the fire station and we listened to the fireman talk about how to be safe and what to do if there is a fire. I saw some excellent listeners while we were there and they all made me so proud! After we learned all the safety tips we got to go through the ambulance, walk across the fire truck, and most of the students favorite part....SPRAY THE HOSE! We had a fantastic time! A huge thank you goes out to the Viking Fire Department! You made 15 second graders very happy today!
