Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze!

We braved the COLD and went to the pumpkin patch and corn maze. The maze was pretty impressive this year. I wasn't sure we were ever going to make it out of there! We only made a couple wrong turns! After we made our way through the maze, we each got to pick out the perfect pumpkin for our project. I think this class did a great job of picking the perfect pumpkin! I hope you enjoy our pictures below! :)

Pumpkin Patch Reader's Theater!

We have been practicing really hard on a readers theater called Pumpkin Patch. I am so impressed with all three of our reading groups! They sure used some wonderful expression and read so fluently. Check out our "monkey" group reading the Pumpkin Patch!

Trip to the Fire Station!

Our class wrote "Thank You" letters to give to the firefighters when we went over to the fire station. They really took their time and they turned out so nice. Pictures of our work is below!

When we went to the fire station we all huddled in together in the fire station and we listened to the fireman talk about how to be safe and what to do if there is a fire. I saw some excellent listeners while we were there and they all made me so proud! After we learned all the safety tips we got to go through the ambulance, walk across the fire truck, and most of the students favorite part....SPRAY THE HOSE! We had a fantastic time! A huge thank you goes out to the Viking Fire Department! You made 15 second graders very happy today!

"Quotation Marks"

We learned about quotation marks today in grammar. We only use them when the person is talking. Remember the special words to look for are said and asked. All the students used white boards to correct sentences on the board. They did an awesome job on quotation marks!

Bubblegum Math!

We started bubblegum math in our classroom today! We will be taking timed tests on our addition and subtraction math facts all year long. Our class started out by learning doubles. I am very proud to say that they all passed doubles!!!! Our next math facts to pass are the sums of ten. When we pass that we will go on to +0, +1, +2, etc. Each time a timed test is passed they get to color in the bubble gum with that sign. The reward for passing is a piece of bubble gum from our bubble gum machine that will be in our classroom next week! A letter will be going home to explain gumball math a little bit further.

Check out our fun bulletin board to keep track of our fact fluency.

What Makes a Ten, Predicates, and Our Spooktacular 2nd Graders!

Today in math we worked on the addends that make a ten. We wrote down all the facts that have the sum of ten and then practiced our sums with the video below. There were quite a few students who answered all the questions correctly. I was pretty impressed. We will be starting our near doubles and sums of ten next week for our timed test. Make sure you really practice hard this weekend!

They can practice this video at home!

In grammar we worked on predicates. The predicate tells what the subject is doing. Example... The second grade class went to the circus. The second grade class would be the subject and went to the circus would be the predicate. Our class has improved immensely on finding the subjects and predicates this week. We always circle the subjects and underline the predicates. We practiced this by playing subject and predicate scoot. They had to find either the subject or the predicate and write it in the box while they SCOOTED around the classroom to different sentences.

Our art project this week was to make tissue paper ghosts for our October bulletin board. The boy ghosts are wearing ties and the girls have a bow in their hair. They turned out so cute! There are some pretty talented artists in my classroom this year!

Doubles, Doubles, We Can Add Doubles!

We have had so much fun the past two days adding doubles. Yesterday, we made double fact gum to keep all of our doubles facts in. They keep their double fact gum in their SAFARI folders and practice them every night at home. This Friday will be our final timed test for doubles facts! After our lesson today on near doubles we played addition double memory around the room. Remember to keep practicing doubles every day! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Here are some fun songs we used to practice our double facts!
